Why Enrichment?

Having a happy and behaviourally healthy dog is more than just physical exercise, mental stimulation is just as important and should be a priority. Enrichment has increasingly become a focus for trainers, behaviour specialists and dog owners in recent times, and for good reason. In the past, a yard with some toys, walks, fetch and meals from a bowl was the standard for so many dogs. Through science and experience, we now realise the power of enrichment, not only for high energy dogs or ‘destructive’ dogs, but for every single dog, of all sizes, breeds, ages and abilities.

Enrichment, by definition, is the action of improving or enhancing the quality or value of something. By adding some well considered activities and toys, we are enhancing our dogs’ quality of life, not only mentally, but emotionally, physically and behaviourally. Enrichment toys and activities can help develop problem solving skills and frustration tolerance skills, it can build confidence, reduce boredom, build and maintain physical health, assist with weight loss, and reduce the chances of developing canine cognitive dysfunction. Clearly, the benefits exist for behaviourally sound dogs, but we have also discovered how much they can empower and improve the lives of nervous, fearful, anxious and reactive dogs. Obviously all dogs are different and these activities do not directly fix behavioural concerns, but form part of a whole petwellness approach to help them cope better in a human world.

Enrichment is our passion, and we love to help pets and their families discover the fun and benefits enrichment brings. We offer a variety of services from workshops to in home visits. Keep an eye out for our upcoming Enrichment Courses for puppies and adults.
